Touching Our Inner Peace

Our thoughts lead to our feelings and behaviors. Many of our thoughts are unhelpful, habitual, and lead to unpleasant feelings. We need to become more aware of our thoughts.

When we create awareness, we can start to disengage from our thoughts, and make space inside ourselves. We can begin to know that we are not our thoughts. Our truest self is the screen on which our thoughts and feelings manifest. Our truest self is our ‘I am’ presence, an inner peace that is always inside, maybe hidden, but there.. You can learn and teach yourself how to tune in more frequently to the inner peace inside, your ‘I am’ presence. Your mind will judge you, but the ‘I’ will not. You are your truest self when your mind is quiet.

How do we begin to touch on our truest selves?

Breathe deeply. Take deep breaths in through your nose, hold it in your belly for 2-3 seconds, and then breathe out through your mouth. When you breathe like this, your mind is quiet because it is following the breath. This is an ancient spiritual practice.

Look at the sky for 30 seconds to a minute throughout the day. The sky is expansive, open, always there, whether it’s a blue sky or gray and rainy. Looking at the sky can give you an expansive, open feeling, helping you to touch upon your truest, peaceful nature that’s inside you.

Observe nature and spend time in nature. Nature has a peaceful, quiet quality to it. It can be easier for your mind to be quiet when you’re immersed in nature. You can say to yourself, “aware”, and then look around at the sense perceptions, the trees, the birds, the flowers, the leaves, the water, the sunshine, and notice how the sun and light reflect on the trees and water. As you say to yourself, “aware”, just notice what is around you with your senses without the mind interpreting.

Say to yourself “I am". When you say this to yourself, it can quiet your mind. It helps you to tune into the deep “I am” presence within. You are conscious now; you are present. When you say to yourself “I am”, observe what happens inside. I say this frequently to myself. It helps me to remember the ‘real me’ in the present moment, where life is always occurring.

Love and accept yourself right now. Love and accept your past self knowing you did the best you could at the time with the knowledge, understanding and awareness you had. You can learn to love yourself. If you don’t know how to, just be willing to love yourself. When you love and accept your past self and present self, it can quiet the judging mind. The mind will judge you, but the ‘I’ will not. Your soul loves you unconditionally and without conditions.
